From Movie Stars to Mayhem: The Minions Are Taking Over the 1920s
New Characters, Lovecraftian Creatures, and an All-Star Voice Cast
Fresh off the blockbuster success of Despicable Me 4, Illumination is taking us back in time for the most ambitious entry in the franchise yet. Minions & Monsters, hitting theaters on July 1, serves as a "prequel to the prequel," landing our favorite yellow troublemakers in the heart of 1920s Hollywood.
This isn't just another day at the office for the Minions; it's a "totally true" story of how they conquered the silver screen, lost it all, and accidentally unleashed ancient monsters onto the world using a stolen spellbook. Directed by franchise veteran Pierre Coffin, the film introduces a brand-new tribe of Minions—led by heroes James and Henry—marking the first film in the series to step away from Gru and the original trio.
The voice cast is a heavy-hitting lineup of Academy Award winners and comedy legends. We’re talking Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, and Jesse Eisenberg, alongside South Park co-creator Trey Parker. With the creative team behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Secret Life of Pets at the helm, Minions & Monsters is poised to be the animated event of the summer. Whether it's summoning a "fun-sized" Cthulhu or navigating the chaos of a silent film set, the Minions are proving once again why they are the most iconic characters of their generation.
