The Law Has Limits. They Don’t.
When the traditional justice system is completely broken, how far would you go to expose the truth? That is the haunting question at the center of By Any Means, an explosive new historical thriller hitting theaters this September. Based on an unbelievable true story, the film uncovers a dark, compromised chapter of American history where the lines between the law, justice, and brutal vengeance are entirely wiped away.
The first trailer gives audiences a terrifying look into a segregated 1960s Mississippi, setting the stage for one of the most intense cinematic alliances in recent memory: a straight-laced Black FBI agent and a notorious Mafia hitman.

The Premise: A Deadly Civil Rights Investigation
The narrative follows Agent Strider, played with fierce intensity by Emmy-winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Strider is a young, deeply idealistic Black FBI agent who joined the Bureau because he genuinely believed he could make a difference from within the system. However, his faith is put to the ultimate test when he is dropped directly into the tinderbox of 1960s Mississippi.
A wave of brutal, unsolved killings is actively targeting prominent civil rights leaders. Local law enforcement is not just unhelpful; they are actively complicit, shielding the local Ku Klux Klan chapters responsible for the terror. With a growing stack of unsolved files on his desk and burning crosses lighting up the night sky, Strider quickly realizes that standard FBI protocols are completely useless in a state ruled by institutionalized racism and fear. Nobody is willing to talk to the federal government—at least, not willingly.

The Twist: An Unholy Alliance Between the Bureau and the Mob
With the investigation entirely stalled, the FBI decides to execute a highly unorthodox, deeply dangerous plan. To crack the case, they recruit Greg Scarpa (Mark Wahlberg), a ruthless, real-life enforcer and hitman for the Colombo crime family.
As the movie poster brilliantly puts it: "The FBI couldn't crack it. So they called in the mob."

Wahlberg’s Scarpa is the polar opposite of Abdul-Mateen’s Strider. He is chaotic, violent, entirely unbothered by rules, and carries a baseball bat as casually as a briefcase. When the two are paired up as an unlikely duo, the friction is immediate and electric. Strider expects proper legal procedures; Scarpa prefers shattering glass storefronts, threatening corrupt shop owners, and extracting information through raw, unadulterated intimidation.
Trailer Breakdown: Blurring the Lines of Justice
The newly released trailer showcases the incredible cinematic tension directed by Elegance Bratton (The Inspection). Written by Sascha Penn, the screenplay pulls no punches. We see Strider attempting to maintain his composure while navigating "Whites Only" establishments, only for Scarpa to step in and violently upend the local power dynamics.
One of the trailer's standout sequences features a tense roadside ambush where Scarpa casually takes matters into his own hands, firing back at attackers with zero hesitation. When a stunned Strider points out that he just shot at people, Scarpa smirks, noting that there are no witnesses and no crime, before declaring, "I’m fucking starving, let's go." It’s a moment that perfectly encapsulates the film's dark humor and gritty, high-stakes atmosphere.
But the trailer also anchors itself in the deep personal stakes of the era. We get glimpses of Nicole Beharie playing Strider's wife, highlighting the immense physical danger brought right to the agent's doorstep as the Klan retaliates against his investigation. The stellar supporting cast includes heavyweights like Giancarlo Esposito and David Strathairn, promising a deeply acted, emotionally resonant historical drama alongside the intense action sequences.
Why 'By Any Means' is a Must-Watch This September
What makes By Any Means stand out from typical true-crime or historical dramas is its refusal to paint the narrative in simple black-and-white terms. It explores the moral compromises required to fight an entrenched evil. As the tension escalates, Agent Strider is forced to decide how much of his own morality he is willing to sacrifice to achieve true justice for the victims.
Bratton’s direction brings a sharp, modern energy to the 1960s setting, while producers from acclaimed action thrillers like The Town, Sicario, and John Wick ensure that the film's pacing and choreography are relentlessly thrilling.
Closing Thoughts: Mark Your Calendars
By Any Means promises to be a gripping, provocative cinematic experience that will have audiences talking long after the credits roll. It is a story about a broken system, an impossible partnership, and a fight for justice that required breaking every single rule in the book.
Catch By Any Means exclusively in theaters on September 4.
