Liminal Horror Hits the Mainstream

Before we even reach June, A24 is looking to strike gold with Backrooms. Based on the viral internet phenomenon, the film is tracking for a massive $20M–$30M opening on May 29. Industry insiders suggest these numbers might even be "lowballing" the potential, as projects based on internet lore (like Five Nights at Freddy's) have a history of shattering early expectations.

June 5: A Battle of Icons

The first weekend of June is shaping up to be a total clash of titans. On one side, we have the live-action Masters of the Universe, which is currently projected to open in the $25M–$35M range. Fans are eager to see Nicholas Galitzine’s Prince Adam defend Eternia, but he’ll have to fight for the top spot against the long-awaited return of a comedy legend.

Scary Movie 6 Aims for the Funny Bone

Thirteen years since the last entry, Scary Movie 6 is tracking to open with a solid $25M–$35M. With the original creators back in the fold, the film is poised to parody the recent "elevated horror" trend and the Scream resurgence. If these projections hold, it could be the biggest opening for the franchise in over two decades.
